I am having problems with my lilac, last year half of the bush turned brown. If I cut it all the way back to about six inches will it hurt the plant or help it. I have tried dusting it and checked it for aphids but there is nothing there just brown leaves. Does anyone know what I can do to save the bush?

Marylin this may sound funny but I have learned that if you give a plant an asprin sometimes that helps depending on size if its a small plant break asprin in half if large give a whole asprin it doesnt matter what kind of brand you get as long as its the chalky powdery kind hope this helps let me know how it works .

I would like to bring to attention, to anyone who might be interested, a garden tour being held in Harding County, SD on June 20th. One of the gardens that will be viewed that day is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Ovitz. This garden is most interesting and exquisite for this area. Petrifiied wood, among other rocks and stones, is used to accent the plants. Their large "A-Frame" home sits in the center of the gardens and ties them altogether. Mrs. Ovitz is a master gardener and certainly has put her talents to good use. By the way, this tour is free to the public. I enjoy "Gardening How-To and have used many of the ideas from it.

I always plant Yukon gold potatoes. Last year they were all tops. I moved the location to a new garden spot. This year they are very lanky with perhaps 4" between branches. Some do have blossoms on them.. Does anyone know why this is happening. Until the last 2 years my potatoes have been excellent.

this is a rather funny story. My boy friend bought some tomato trees off the Tv. we planted the seed in starter pots and babied them till they were about 6-8" tall. by the time we actually got them planted in bigger pots it was actually a bit late in the season. when they first started growing we thought, "What funny looking plants!" they looked nothing like a tomato plant at all!! they were tall with just a few leaves, then a week or so ago we noticed an extremely odd looking "pod" growing out the top. we thought, shoot that is a weed!!! but we kept watering it and giving it fertilizer just out of curiosity to see what it would do. we now are the proud owners of a 4 ft tall "tomato" sunflower!!! and also a smaller 18" sunflower. we might not get any tomatoes from it but we did get a good laugh!

In the spring my roses are disease free. :) Due to the fog and cool climate 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean my roses quickly succomb to rust, powdery mildrew and black spot. I have used with great sucess Bayer 3 in 1. This contains fertilizer, insect control and disease control and keeps the garden healthy into the summer. It's late September now and too late to be appling fertilizer yet the disease really must be treated. I haven't seen Bayer or any other systemic just for disease. Can you help me? Ilene (losing the battle) I live in California and they have tight control on any chemicals sold in the state. (Prop 65)

before new front yard Last year when we heared about water shortage here in the Bay Area we decided to have an eco friendly front yard. We used to have all grass for almost 5 yrs & tried to struggle in reviving it by watering almost 2x a day to keep it green. This year we decide it's about time to replace it w/ a new lawn & small portion of grass & more on white gravel. We now have an eco friendly front yard. We water less frequent. See attached pic before & after. Susan CA
