What I thought: ‘Apricot Delight’ and ‘Wonderful Wampee’ yarrow are two of my favorite new perennials. I have always loved yarrow, but these new plants look like little jewels and add a touch of glamour to my garden. ‘Apricot Delight’ is like a chameleon—its colors constantly change through a range of pink shades, from pale apricot to near red. I love its delicate, fernlike leaves. ‘Wonderful Wampee’ produces flowers that open to a rich pink, then turn to an apple-blossom blush. The flowers started blooming in midsummer and they bloomed like crazy all season into fall. I used cut yarrow in fresh-cut flower arrangements and spiced up my fall containers with dried yarrow. Both plants love the heat, thrive in full sun, and will grow up to 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide. I watered them regularly because last year was their first year in the garden, but once they are established they will be able to tolerate some drought.

PROS
As mentioned by the editor above, they're very beautiful flowers. I tend to let my flowerbed do as it will, since birds are always knocking seeds into it, and the flowers are only loosely arranged: the apricot delights always stand out. Since my other flowers tend to be muted colors like blue and yellow, the red really pops and gives it a much more vibrant, cheerful feel, while the pinks make the backyard feel welcoming and soothing.

CONS
Kind of delicate, for yarrow. I've never had any complaints with this type of flower before, but these seem substantially less resilient. In the south, we have heavy thunderstorms quite frequently in summer, and these poor blooms just can't take the downpour.

OVERALL
All in all, they do what flowers are supposed to do: they look pretty. The blooms are attractive, and while they can't take an Alabama thunderstorm, they hold up well in the haze of summer. I had two plots devoted to them, since they were so pretty, and I wondered at the end of last summer if they would ever stop blooming.
