Fiskars PowerGear 2 Bypass Lopper
MSRP: $21.90 to $29.99

Online Rating: (9/10)

Where to find it: Fiskars, www.fiskars.com. Search by ZIP code to find a local retailer.

What it is:  A lopper with a blade that sweeps past the lower jaw like a giant scissors.  Ideal for both light and heavy-duty pruning.

What I thought: I loved my lilac bush, but its rampant growth had gotten out of control. After the lilac finished blooming, I used the Fiskars PowerGear 2 bypass lopper to thin out about one-third of its branches, cutting them out at the base of the plant. The lopper allowed me to slice through the larger stems with ease, making a razor-clean cut. Its long handles easily extended my reach deep into the shrub, so I could make clean cuts without the rest of the branches poking me in the face. The gears gave me extra cutting power to make big cuts quickly and easily. This lopper was about half the weight of my old lopper, making pruning easier than ever. And the ergonomic handles fit comfortably in my hands. This lopper is so easy to use, I almost cut too many branches off of my lilac!

I love mine. Recieved them as a gift from the inlaws and have had no problems with cutting anything from thick branches, small trees, vines, roots, roses, and bushes. They are not heavy and they are soo easy to use.

CONS

One of the best loppers I have ever had...won't buy another set ever again if I can help it.

The gear mechanism makes all the difference in the world in the ease of use.

CONS

OVERALL
I've had this bypass lopper for 3 years now and wouldn't trade it for anything. It's in perfect condition, but if it should ever malfunction I'll just run on down to the retailer and buy another one just like it. In fact, after buying this particular item I pretty much went to Fiskars for other hand gardening tools and have been very happy with the reasonable cost and ease of use of them all.

I use mine to clear fence lines on our north Texas ranch. I cant believe how eaisily they cut large oak, meaquite and bois d ark limbs. After 3 years of use the main pivot bolt broke and I called the hotline that I found online. My call was answered instantly and the lady was very courteous. I received my new loppers in 10 days. Wow. I only wanted a new bolt.

This Lopper is just unbelievable. Because its unmatched construction I have been able to prune and trim branches that I have never been able to handle before. The way the ratcheting is constructed it puts out much more power than any other on the market and still be lightweight enough for me to handle. It is a great tool especially for women who do not have the upper body strength of a man.

CONS
None.

I have many pruning shears over the years but nothing compares with these. I guess it has to do with the ratcheting, because with these loppers I can cut through larger branches with little difficulty. My old neighbors let the shrubs, that were on their property, grow to 30 feet high and would not allow me to trim them. Got new neighbors and we cut them back to the ground with now difficulty. Even with branches up to 2 inches in diameter were no problem. Wouldn't trade them for any others. Oh, yes the shrubs look great, are coming back thick and green.

I received these last week. I love them. I have several trees in my backyard that needed to be pruned. I was going to try them on a branch or 2. After trying these lopers, I grabbed the ladder and pruned as many branches as I was able to reach. These made the job quick and easy. No exertion was needed on my part. Using these lopers is as easy as using scissors to cut a piece of paper. Great product.

PROS
I received these to test, and write my review about them. I loved the light weight of the item. But I like the fact they have handles long enough to give you that needed leverage for cutting. I tested these in my (semi forest out back). They were light weight, easy to use. I was able to easily cut about 2 14 inches of branch with these. They seem to be made with a non corrosive(non rusting ) material, which I feel will help them last a long long time. If I should last longer than they do, I will certainly buy a new pair,as I personally fell they are well worth the money. I should get plenty of use in my mini forest on the back 9.

CONS
This is difficult as I have yet to find a con .Someone else mentioned a hook for hanging. This could be helpful ,But I wouldn't really consider it a con. Some one else above said that after sharpening it so many times, they couldn't sharpen it any more and bought a second one. This is great, but to let everyone know, it appears, the blades are attached with bolts,. This would indicate to me, that these blades could be easily replaced if needed, saving the cost of an entire now cutter.

OVERALL
over all I would say with replaceable blades, and light weight, these are some of the best cutters I have used to date.

PROS
Top Choice for people who suffer with pain/restriced use of their upper limb areas, including Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), Arthritis, Myo-facia Pain Syndrome, Fibormialgia, etc and want to continue gardening! Exceptional ease of use. A must try for everyone. Outstanding for cutting small to medium branches with very little "OOMPTH" required. Gives a clean cut not a smooshed one - much healthier for the shrub/tree.

CONS
It does not cut "twigs" well, but it is not supposed to.

OVERALL
I am disabled with an advanced form of RSD. The first couple of years my gardening was limited to "Enjoy the View". Then, enter Fiscars with a nice selection of tools with gears, This made an exreme difference and has allowed me to once again do the yardwork I love. This Fiscars Tool has performed outstanding the past two years. It has really been put to the test as it was one of the FISCARS TOOLS we used to clear another 1/2 acre of land so we could put in more gardensl The most important part of this tool is THE GUARANTEE by FISCARS. If you have never used it (the Guarantee) or you have decided not to use the guarantee because of the hassle, GIVE FISCARS GUARANTEE A TRY. THEY STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS and treat their customers well.

I have arthritis and severe arm pain made me swear off long-handled clippers of any sort several years ago. When the Fiskar clippers came for product testing, I hesitated to use them, but decided to have a go at some dead wood in the shrubs near our house. First of all, even with my limited arm strength, the clippers cut through branches an inch or more in diameter because of the torquing action. Even better, I had no arm pain that day or the next. Fiskar is a quality name and if these clippers are any indication of the caliber of their ergonomic line of tools, I heartily endorse it.

CONS
None that I could find.

I have arthritis and have been limited as to how much trimming I can do at a session. These trimmers are short handled making it easy to balance the clippers during positioning on the branch. The ease of operation due to the gear allowed me to accomplish more trimming per session.

PROS
A versatile tool, basically two in one. I can grab the bypass loppers instead of grabbing loppers and a saw. I love being able to cut through large branches with ease. They are very light, and the blade stays sharp.

CONS
You need a lot of space to use this tool. If you are up in a tree, sometimes I find it difficult to open the blade up wide. They require a lot of open space to open. I also have found the frame will weaken and ultimately break with extended use.

OVERALL
Overall, besides the above mentioned cons, I really appreciate the minimal effort it takes to cut branches and the light weight of the tool itself. I am a professional gardener, and I can honestly say despite breaking a couple of these, I still go out and replace them with the exact same one. The price is right and the tool is decent. I have found no other tool on the market like them.

PROS
The cutting blades are very share and don't bend when I'm trying to cut the limbs on my bushes. The gearing makes it even easier for me to do the job and the handles fit perfectly in my hands, ergonomic. Very light weight which is a plus since I have several bushes and trees that need to be pruned on a regular basis.

CONS
The handles are a nice length, however, an extending handle would be great for getting to those limbs that are "just" a little high but don't want to get a step or "just" too low to use a pole pruner.

OVERALL
The best garden tool purchase I made! I'm on my second pair...a friend borrowed my first pair. Liked them so much I never got them back. haha They are comfortable to use and always make clean cuts. I clean them when I'm done with the pruning and I've never had to worry about them rusting, breaking or bending the blades. Very dependable.

These lopper are great. With the extending handles is a blessing. You don't get knocked in the eyes or face. Fiskars Power Gear 2 Bypass Loppers are sharp enough for me to use.I thought I would never get to work in our yard again because of medical problems pain/restriced use of their upper limb areas, RA and ragular Arthritis, Mayo-facial Pain Syndrome, Fibormialgia, etc and want to continue gardening on our 3 1/2 arcers of land. The are sharp and cut through anything. I would recommend them to anyone. They are my favorite. good find.

CONS
none

OVERALL
These are the best I have ever used. Most rust, or get dull after the third or fourth time we use them.

PROS
It works very well on my lilac bushes and also for my snowball bushes... they need trimed just about every spring... I also used it on the under brush in our small lot of wooded area to help clean it out some.

CONS
other than over use and achey joints from too many hours of fun...

OVERALL
I enjoy it and it cuts very well! Iam very happy with it.

I just got my fiskars lopper and went right out to the yard. I cleared out branches that had been out of reach before. I trimmed overgrown evergreens, unruly yews and cut back roses and butterfly bushes. No matter how thick the branch was, the loppers cut with ease and a clean cut so I'll get a clean heal after cutting.

CONS
couldn't find anything wrong at all.

OVERALL
Fiskars sells a good product I can count on and I'll continue to buy their products. The lightweight tools are easy on my hands and the grips are sturdy and slip proof.

I drilled a hole in the handle, put a piece of leather shoestring through and now I can hang them up.
