The local bakery donated a 5 gal bucket of coffee grounds + filters to my garden.  I put a lot of it around my bluedberry bushes, and then remembered someone said ROSES like coffee too.  So how deep a mulch of grounds would a rose like?  Or does it need to be dug into the soil?  I love roses, but I'm not very good with them.

Thanks

hi joan

when i lived in washington i stopped by starbucks everyday to get used grounds...they pack them up in 5 pound bags and by noon there may be several.

anyways, i just sprinkled the grounds about 1" deep under the roses, peonies, daphne, gardenia, and any other shrubby plant i had (except the rhodies)...it breaks down eventually, smells yummy, looks nice, and keeps the ants away!...and for a while helps as a mulch, but after a few rains it needs replaced (lol- thats why i got more grounds daily)

If I need  to quickly lower my pH (more acidic) I usually go to my local coffee shop early in the morning and ask him to save some, by the end of the day I have about 45lbs.

Are we talking about lowering the P h, not boosting it?

Yes. Coffee is acidic, therefore it has a lower pH level. Anything below 7 is acidic, 7 is neutral and above a pH of 7 is alakine.

Coffee grounds have always been in my gardening book. Have I used them? No. I did have a plant in my office that my secretary dumped her coffee dregs in each day. (Much to my dismay!) That plant was always happy. Can I blame it on coffee? I don't know. It really didnt get any other love! HA! I think it was the caffene buzz! The freaking plant was happy!

The Peonie pods are most likley steril. They are Hybrids. Even the old ones. If you can get them to grow, then God bless you! Give them to the kids, we won't be around to see them bloom!

PH is a funny thing. Low is bad! It will burn you! High is bad! It will burn you! Acid or alkaline (sp?) Years of school didnt help me with the spelling of that word! HA! Send your soil to the County Extension Service. They will tell you what it needs. I swear by them!

I wasn't much help.

Good Luck!

If you have a chicken coop fenced in..use the chicken poop around your roses...or plant the roses outside of the ckicken pen.

Chicken poop is great! Just make sure that it is old poop. Fresh poop is way too "Hot" for plants. It is a case of the cure being worse than the disease! Good Luck!

re: chicken poo

The local ag extensions in Western WA did research this past spring which showed that even composted chicken poo was WAY lower than any of the other poo's for usable amendment to the garden.  One of the top winners were rabbits.  When I had rabbits, I had the most gorgeous blueberries and roses.  I piled the bases with the rabbit and they were spectacular.  You would do much better bringing in some composted horse poo or cow poo and have a much better ending result.  Ounce for ounce, the others have more nutrients and less burning than the chicken does.  Even composted chicken.
