Get rid of them quickly with a pie pan and some beer. Fill a shallow pie pan with beer and set near problem areas. The next day you will find a ton of dead slugs. Dump and repeat till slugs aren't a problem anymore.

High caffinated liquids work as well and in addition, crush up those egg shells. They hate them.
