I'm Getting A Solar Light

I had an EMail from the Club asking if I would be interested to try a "Light My Shed 2"
.  It was on a  first come, first served, basis so I needed to answer right back. I did so, and now I have been informed that I have been selected to receive it. I looked it up; it is a Solar Light. No wiring or anything involved, just attach the Solar Panel to the outside and the light
inside.  I will place this in my Greenhouse when I get it.
So to everyone who complains about getting only seeds, etc. this shows that we can get some pretty good stuff if we wait long enough.

Hey, good for you.  That really is exciting and useful, I'm sure.  I got a pruning saw and pruners recently and was glad of that.  The pruners are small and fit my hand very well.

Thanks, Betty. I wouldn't mind a new Pruning Saw or Clippers, either!

Actually, Marge, they were the test items that I got when I became a Premier Life Member.  Hopefully, I'll get some good stuff with this type life membership.  I'd like a composter or shredder or something on that order.  Solar light would be good too.  If you are interested in the Premier Life Membership, send me a PM.

I'll think about that, but it's probably something I don't need too much. Thanks; I'll keep it in mind.

I'm still holding out for a new F-350 or a new John Deere.  Real tractor, not a lawn mower. :^)

And I have filled out the product test sign-up sheet since becoming a premier life member this summer.   Still waiting....

I know this paints me as a really greedy soul, but I won't be truly happy till I get a good Chipper/Shredder....
Hope you get your big tractor.

Chris, I too filled out a form after I became a premier lifer and am waiting too.  I'm holding out for a composter or chipper/shredder or anything bigger than a packet of seed.  I did get a deck mat once which has been good.  It is under the smoker.

I got a pair of rubber garden clogs that I still wear.  Not often, just once in a while.  But they still fit and work.  I got one of those grill mats as well.  No idea where it is now.  Coup de gras was the Echo string trimmer.  But I don't use a trimmer very often, so it hasn't been used much.  And several packs of seeds.  I probably got some other things, but I don't remember.

I got a coil hose for submitting a letter that got published.

Well, sounds like you've gotten some nice enough products.  I've gotten the Easy Arranger which is supposed to make arranging flowers easy.  As a matter of fact I've gotten two of those things, just different names.  The grill mat was one of the better items and seeds.  I got  one packet that I liked.  The seeds were on a piece of something and all you had to do was place that on the soil and cover it up.  There were lettuce seeds on there and the lettuce grew well and was very good.  The loose seeds that I've received didn't germinate so well.  I don't have a composter nor a chipper/shredder so that's what I need.  I don't have a greenhouse either and I'd like that too.

I have also received a few little freebies. But the best thing I think so far, was one of those GroBox or whatever they're called., things. It works so well that I bought a second one.
If you follow the directions you can grow some big plants in those.

When I first wrote my compost FAQ, Justin was still around and he asked if I'd mind if he put it in the NHGC online article library.  So I told him that would be fine if he'd send me a NHGC book on veggie gardening.  So he did.  Not sure I'd buy any of them, but a freebie is well worth it.  Nice pics.  Decent descriptions.  But there are just as many pics and descriptions online these days.

I hope your solar light is better than the ones I've seen.  I bought one of those path lights one time that glowed amber and not very brightly at all.  So I returned it.  Then I tried to get a clip on a couple years ago that I could use on my truck after dark to help with unloading late loads of leaves in the fall.  It had 7 or 8 LED's on it and was fairly bright.  But it had a faulty switch and when I tried to return it, they said they'd just send another one.  So they did and that one wouldn't turn off completely, so it kept draining the battery.  I complained and then they sent a third one.  Seems like the same problem again.  So I sent a long recap and got all my money back, including shipping.  It was an Internet purchase and the "tech support" was obviously of middle eastern background and not happy that I was calling right when they were trying to leave for the day the first time I called.  Which just made my day because I do tech support and have to stay late all the time.  So I hope you get a decent light.

It hasn't arrived yet, they said 2 or 3 weeks, and it's only been just over one. I hope I don't have a horror story like yours. Oh, I always get the people who are wanting out the door. Especially if I have to call any of the computer type 800 numbers. They say, press so and so for English and I always get someone who can barely speak English and they get angry because I can't understand them. But the best one of all was a guy in the Radio Shack store who was seemingly of middle eastern descent, being oh, so much smarter than me,  yet he couldn't count out 17 cents of change. Go figure.

This crazy reply window took forty forevers to get ready for me to reply.  Isn't anything easy anymore?  Now, what I wanted to say is that I'd like to win that Torch Light on the GardenGiveAway.  Or the $50 that is above each forum.

Marge, let us know when your solar light comes in.  Did they tell you the value of the thing?  As much as I can, I try doing a live chat with the Techs.  They are usually from somewhere way off in nether netherland but at least I don't have to try to decipher what they are saying.  A lot of them are from India.  What's wrong with our American people?  Can't they assist people with their problems?  Chris, aren't you an IT?  We have intelligent people here without getting foreigners that can't speak English.  That's was free!  Now, I'm going.

Betty, I see what you mean; I thought this thing would never be ready for me to post.
I still have not received the Solar light, but on the E-mail they did give me a couple links
so I could look it up. It seems to be priced at around $120, so hopefully it will turn out to be
a pretty nice item..
What gets my goat about any form of the tech help, is if it states, "Press 1 for English" Then I expect an English Speaking person. Not some accent one couldn't cut with a sword. But then they get all huffy if they have to repeat something to me.

I hear you on the English, Marge.  I was trying to talk to someone at Dell when I was working as secretary at our church.  All I got was a person from outer space, I do think.  I couldn't understand but about every 3rd word.  He got so frustrated with me that I finally gave the phone to a young lady that was there.  She seemed to understand him better than I.

Wow!  I've never gotten a product worth that much.  I hope it is a good one too.

Yes, I'm in IT.  I used to do tech support at a good sized technical college near here.  It was wonderful!  I had a golf cart to ride around campus on.

Then I got a job where I sat inside with a phone attached to my ear for 8 hours a day.  Gained 20 pounds in a year and found a better job in another year.  But coming off unemployment, I was ready to do anything.  They did introduce me to Oracle, which is my primary job today.  I've been here almost 11 years now.  Very relaxed atmosphere.  Less relaxed in the last 3 years or so, but still not bad.  If they can get my pay in line with everybody else doing my job, I'll be much happier.

But as for ferners doing tech support, they do it cheap.  I'm sure they have lists of questions and a tree sort of routine (if yes, go here, if no, go there).  They have to assume everybody that calls in is dumb as stump until they figure out otherwise.  Indians in particular don't have a great sense of humor about anything.  They still live in class system in society and that doesn't help.  Americanized Indians are better, but still tend to be less socialized than other folks.  I've worked with a lot of them, and they are great people once you get to know them.  I went to school with a lot of them as well and learned to focus on what they were saying because they talk so quick and with the front of their mouth so there's not much enunciation going on.  The tone of their voice says a lot too.  Up and down and around.

I figure if you need help and you can't get good help, then you ought to return the product and try another one.

If I have to go into a place that sells electronics, I look for the youngest guy in the store.
Even if he is 14 and just minding the store for 10 seconds. These kids are Born knowing how to do this stuff.

Linda, my Solar Light arrived via UPS on Monday. It seems to be apretty nice item. We installed it yesterday but it's raining so it won't be doing much for a couple more days.
I already have lights in the GH but I don't spend much time out there at night. I was sort of surprised at this thing having the On/off switch.
We'll have to compare notes once we get some sunshine.

Nope, no paperwork at all. I suppose we'll have to report online. And By The Way,
how long are we supposed to use Test Products before turning in our report!? Anyone know?
Linda, we installed ours right inside the door, overhead. There was a lot of extra hardware
included; hubby already "borrowed" some of it for another job.
Supposed to be a sunny day today---

It was sunny part of the day yesterday. I re-read the tiny instruction sheet and it says to give it at least two days to charge, so I resisted the urge to turn it on. It is 30 here now and Old Sol may shine again. We Shall See---

Even though it was cold and windy, still it was sunny yesterday. I tried the solar light and it worked just great. I did turn it back off before too long. I'll wait for another sunny period and then try leaving it on some evening to see how long the charge lasts.
I still don't know how long we are supposed to test it before turning in our report.
Hope you feel better.( My Mom always swore by Vick's. )
Good Luck with your light.

As long as you have mounted it, turned it off and on a few times, and have gone through a few charge/discharge sessions, that's probably about all you can do before rating it.  I read that it is supposed to have a 2 hour burn period now, I think.  Used to be much shorter.  Maybe it's 4 hours and used to be 2 hours.  Anyway, that's the big improvement between version 1 and 2.

Thanks, Chris. I want to Git-R-Done so I can turn in my report and get my name back in the pot for something else. Namely a chipper/shredder.
I forgot to mention, I had some of those cheapo solar lights that you just stick into the ground and I had put a couple of those in the GH last year  just to see how well they would work.
I was really surprised to find that they work real well---not the brightest lights ever but they still show for a long time after dark.

I left my light on last night. It lasted nearly 3 hrs. The last half hour being very dim.
Keep in mind we haven't had a lot of good steady sunlight. Today will be partly cloudy then they promise 2 sunny days so I'll get 'er charged back up.
I figure the best feature of this, for me-- will be that on/off cord switch. Since I do have electric lights already in there, when the power outages happen, I can go in there and be able to switch that on so I can see to start my backup heat. (which is a small propane heater.)
I don't go out there much at night anyway. I'm usually ready to stretch out and watch tv or read after Supper.

Hey, Linda, glad to know yours is doing what it's supposed to do. It was sunny here yesterday and I tried mine and was surprised how well it had charged after only a short time. It's supposed to be sunny today and maybe tomorrow so think I will just leave it alone for the time being and then try another session to see how long it stays on.
*It would be swell if they would come up with a Solar Heater that I could afford.
