My carrots and potatoes have worm damage.  Any one else?  And what to do to prevent it?

Are you sure that it is worm damage? Some fungi can make roots look like they have been chewed on. Even if it is a "worm" I doubt that the same type would feed on potatoes and carrots. Having two different root feeders in your garden is unusual. Perhaps you have moles. They love to feed on roots. Some grubs also feed on roots but I still don't think that they would eat both types of rootstock.

If you actually find a worm. Take it to your local Extension Agency. They should be able to identify the little bugger. If they can't, they will send it off to the University for identification. They will charge you a small fee but it is worth it. You might also send a sample of the rootstock in question to them. You can find your local Extension Agency in the blue pages in your phone book. Call them first, tey will tell you what to bring and how to properly collect the samples. Extension Services are not just for farmers. They are glad to assist anyone. Heck, they enjoy it!

I hope I have helped you. Good Luck!

The damage to my potatoes and carrots is just tiny bore holes that will go in just about a quarter inch into the root.  I have never actually seen a worm.  The term 'wireworm' comes to mind.
