Not only are birds enjoyable to watch, but they also keep the population of harmful insects in check. To attract more birds to your garden, try these tips:
• Don’t remove nesting materials. Instead of bagging up messy gardening materials such as straw, twigs, and moss, leave some for the birds.
• Help birds find shelter. Humans may dislike bushes with thorns, but birds love them—they provide a refuge from predators such as neighborhood cats. Prune hedges either before or after the nesting season to avoid disturbing nests.
• Provide water and food. Ponds and birdbaths give birds a place to drink and clean themselves, while plants with edible seeds and berries provide food throughout the season.
