It's common to see one amaryllis bulb per pot, but consider planting three, five, or more bulbs in a large container for a spectacular display. For best success with multiple-bulb containers, follow these tips from the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center:

  • Position bulbs shoulder to shoulder in potting soil in a broad-based decorative container.
  • For a more pleasing effect, plant all the same color and type.
  • Plant bulbs in potting soil, leaving tapered parts exposed. Keep soil moist until growth begins, then water regularly.
  • Turn container often to keep stems from learning toward the light.
  • After flowering, trim stems to 2 inches high, water as needed, and fertilize monthly.
  • In September, stop watering and keep bulbs away from light.
  • In mid-November, move container back into light and resume watering. This will give you a second bloom by the end of December.
