Fall is the ideal time to plant container-grown and balled and burlapped deciduous trees and shrubs. The weather is cooler, plants need less water, and the roots grow well in warm fall soil. Follow our four steps to adding a shrub to your space:

1. Dig a hole that’s as deep as the container and at least 1 to 2 feet wider.

2. Pop shrub out of pot; spread roots. Make several vertical cuts down the root ball if plant is root bound.

3. Plant shrub no more deeply than it was growing before.

4. Water well, and continue to water regularly for several months (or until soil starts to freeze, in colder regions).
