Beaded Geranium Purse

Add beaded accents to beautiful floral print fabric and sew into a purse you'll be dying to show off!

You will need:
• 1/2 yd. Geranium Forest Gold Quilt Fabric*
• 1/3 yd. flannel
• 1/3 yd. black lining fabric
• Silamide Size A*: green, silver, red
• Delica Beads*: #147 silver-lined lime yellow, #263 opaque luster olive green, #721 opaque yellow, #780 matte cranberry, #919 DB color lined moss green
• #10 beading needle*
• #24 or #26 chenille needle*
• Deep green and ecru sewing thread
• 1/2" Yo-Yo Maker* (#8700)
• 7" silver metal purse frame
• 12" silver-filled chain*
• Two nickelplate 9mm split rings*
• Very fine flex wire*
• Antiques #E415 Pewter Light Effects thread*
• 12" black 3/8" flat braided trim

Fabric and bead information
• Look for fabric flower designs with one or two layers of larger petals so beads will not hide flowers after beading.
• Use bead colors that are slightly darker or lighter than fabric area to be covered so they will stand out against fabric.
• Use Silamide bead thread the color of the beads. If unavailable, use a neutral color like natural or silver.

Bead Embroidery Information
• Use two strands of Silamide for all beading. Thread beading needle with two yards of Silamide for large areas to be beaded and one yard for smaller areas.
• When attaching beads, pull Silamide securely so beads do not move. Begin with a knot in the end of Silamide. End Silamide by taking two small stitches on backside of fabric and tie off.
• See photo for front pattern piece placement and beading.

STEP 1: Cut fabric. Cut out floral purse pieces as indicated on each pattern piece. For front pattern piece choose area on fabric with most complete floral pattern. Position pattern over that area and pin in place. Make a tack stitch with ecru sewing thread to mark large black dots on each pattern piece. Cut out lining in same way as floral fabric. Set aside lining and floral gusset pieces. Cut a front and back pattern piece out of flannel but do not cut out gusset pieces.Pin front flannel piece to wrong side of front floral piece and baste pieces together around outside edge with ecru sewing thread. Repeat for back piece. Set back piece aside.

STEP 2: Bead fabric. Use silver Silamide with a #721 opaque yellow bead and single bead backstitch to place a bead in the center of each gold geranium (Figure 1). Use single bead backstitch with green Silamide and #919 DB color lined moss green beads to place five or six beads around outside of yellow bead, leaving a slight space between green beads (Photo A).
Use silver Silamide with a #721 opaque yellow bead and single bead backstitch to place a bead in center of each pink geranium. In same way as gold geranium, use red Silamide with #780 matte cranberry beads to place beads around yellow center.
Use green Silamide with #147 silver-lined lime yellow beads and bead row stitch (Figure 2) to attach beads along some leaf veins (Photo B).
Following manufacturer's directions, use small Yo-Yo Maker to make three yo-yo's. Cut fabric for yo-yo's from gold and pink geranium areas. Use two strands of silver Silamide and chenille needle to make yo-yo's.
Use silver Silamide and #721 opaque yellow beads to fill center hole of yo-yo: Bring needle up inside hole close to one side and slide four to six beads on needle/thread. Take thread across center, and down into fabric on opposite side of hole. Repeat three or four times until center hole is filled with beads.
Use green Silamide and #919 DB color lined moss green beads with bead row stitch to place a row of beads along top edge of fabric around center beads (Photo C).
Attach yo-yo's to lower right area of purse front using deep green sewing thread. To secure, slide stitches under green beaded circle. Overlap yo-yo's to resemble a cluster of flowers as shown.

STEP 3: Sew purse. Use a 1/4" seam allowance with deep green sewing thread and sewing machine to sew purse pieces together. Use chenille needle for any hand sewing.
Place right sides together and sew gusset pieces to embellished floral front and back piece, sewing along side seam line between tack stitches. Trim as needed.
Stitch floral front and back together along bottom curved edge below gussets. Press seams and trim as needed and turn purse to right side.
With right sides together, sew gusset lining pieces to front and back lining pieces along seam line between tack stitches. Trim as needed. Stitch lining front and back together along bottom curved edge below gussets. Trim as needed and remove tack stitches. Do not turn lining right side out.
Pull lining up over floral purse, with right sides together. Sew across top of gussets to stabilize fabrics. Manipulate floral purse fabric to outside of lining. Insert lining down into inside of purse. Turn 1/4" under toward wrong side along top edge of front and back pieces of lining and floral fabric. Firmly baste top edges together to stabilize fabrics before inserting in frame.

STEP 4: Attach to frame. Use ruler and straight pins to mark center point on front piece, back piece, and side gusset pieces. Place pins approximately 1 1/2" down from top edge of fabric and mark center. Center pin on gusset with hinge on frame. Position pins on front and back pieces in center of frame’s front and back. Measure to be sure it is centered correctly on frame. Ease top fabric edge of floral purse into frame. Re-check to be sure all center marks are in correct place. Use deep green thread to take a few temporary stitches across area, sewing through holes in frame to hold in place.
Place knot in end of a long length of very fine flex wire. Use backstitch to secure fabric to frame, sewing through holes in frame to hold fabric in place (Figure 3). Tie off to end.
For a decorative finish, use six strands of Antique pewter #E415 thread and the backstitch to work over wire. Begin with a knot in end of thread and tie off to end.
Use fabric adhesive to glue black braided trim inside frame, covering backstitches/knots that hold frame to fabric. Optional: If you like, use a toothpick to apply small amounts of adhesive.

STEP 5: Finish. Use silver Silamide with #263 opaque luster olive green beads and overlapping beaded fringe to work beaded edge at bottom of purse (Figure 4). Start on left side where gusset and purse seams meet. Hide Silamide knot inside purse in lining seam. Pull Silamide taut after each stitch, but not so it puckers fabric (Photo D). Work around edge, ending just under gusset on opposite side of bottom of purse. Adjust number of beads for last stitch if necessary. Take three small stitches inside purse lining and tie off thread to end.
