Houseplants help keep spirits up during the winter months. But if you have children or pets, take note of several common houseplants whose leaves are considered poisonous:

1. Croton (Codiaeum variegatum)
2. Dumb cane (Dieffenbachia spp.)
3. English ivy (Hedera helix)
4. Philodendron (Philodendron spp.)
5. Pothos (Epipremnum spp.)
6. Swiss-cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa)
7. Umbrella tree (Schefflera spp.)

What about those poinsettias, you ask? They're not poisonous, even though generations of gardeners have passed down the myth. For more information about poisonous plants, contact your local poison control center.
