Organizing your garden supplies doesn't have to be expensive—here's how to use items you already have (or can get cheaply) to create a well-organized storage space:
Coffee or soup cans:
Screw the sides of cans to the underside of shelves or a potting bench. Use them to store small items like gloves, plant labels, and seed packets.
Plywood and screws:
Attach plywood to the beams of your garage or shed. Use two screws, placed next to each other, as holders for the head of each tool. With a marker, draw an outline on the plywood to show where each tool goes.
Masking tape and permanent marker:
Write the names of items on tape with a marker, and cut the tape edges with scissors for a clean edge. Then tape to the plywood.
Extra pieces of board or an old door:
Place a large board or flat door across two sawhorses or stacks of concrete blocks to create a potting/work bench. Use space underneath for stacking buckets, crates, and other storage containers.
Cement blocks:
Stack with the holes facing up to store long-handled tools upright.
Old baskets:
Attach a variety to the ceiling or wall using wire and nails. Store string, seeds, envelopes, and markers in them. Put all your frequently-used hand tools into a basket that you can carry straight to the garden-and make sure you put them back into the basket instead of on the ground!
