Gardeners in many parts of the country are dealing with severe drought—and gardeners just about everywhere know that drought can strike their area at any time. Staff at the University of Massachusetts Extension Service recommend the following plants for drought-resistant plantings:
1. Bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica, Zones 3 to 6)
2. Dwarf sumac (Rhus aromatica, Zones 4 to 9)
3. Golden rain tree (Koelreuteria paniculata, Zones 6 to 9)
4. Hedge maple (Acer campestre, Zones 5 to 8)
5. Inkberry (Ilex glabra, Zones 5 to 9)
6. Pagoda tree (Sophora japonica, Zones 5 to 9)
7. Sweet fern (Comptonia peregrina, Zones 4 to 7)
